Banisteriopsis Caapi – Ourinhos
What is Banisteriopsis Caapi?
Banisteriopsis caapi, also known as Caapi or Yajé, is a sacred vine from the Amazon rainforest. For centuries, it has been used by indigenous shamans for its intensely psychedelic and visionary effects. There are more than 40 known varieties of this vine. At Indian Spirit, we offer two distinct types: Ourinhos and Trueno.
Ourinhos – “Little Gold”
The name Ourinhos translates to “little gold.” This particular strain is especially revered among indigenous and spiritual church communities. It holds a central place in the globally practiced Santo Daime religion, where it is considered a sacred plant ally for spiritual ceremonies and deep inner journeys.
Trueno – “Thunder”
The Trueno variant, meaning “thunder,” is well known for its powerful and heavy effects on the body, providing a deeply transformative and intense experience.
Traditional Use with DMT Plants
Traditionally, Banisteriopsis caapi is brewed together with plants containing DMT (dimethyltryptamine). On its own, orally ingested DMT is broken down by enzymes in the stomach, making it inactive. However, Caapi contains MAO-inhibiting compounds that temporarily block these enzymes, allowing DMT to become active and produce strong visionary states.
Sometimes Caapi is also combined with psilocybin mushrooms, creating even more intense experiences.
