Mimosa Hostilis – Sacred Root Bark for Traditional Use

What is Mimosa Hostilis?

Mimosa hostilis, also known as Mimosa tenuiflora or Jurema, is a perennial shrub native to northeastern Brazil and extending north into southern Mexico. It can grow up to 8 meters tall, with most of its growth occurring in the first five years, reaching 4–5 meters. The root bark of Mimosa hostilis is known for its rich content of natural compounds and has been used for centuries in traditional practices. Our Mimosa hostilis root bark contains approximately 1% DMT (dimethyltryptamine).

Historical & Cultural Background

Mimosa hostilis root bark has played a significant role in both the history and present of psychedelic shamanism. It is often used in the preparation of analog ayahuasca (anahuasca), which combines a DMT-containing plant with an MAOI-containing plant to create visionary brews similar to traditional ayahuasca. Remarkably, Mimosa hostilis is the only known DMT-containing plant that can be consumed orally on its own to induce visionary experiences without the addition of an MAOI plant.

Effects of Mimosa Hostilis

The effects of Mimosa hostilis have been compared to those of a low dose of LSD or psilocybin mushrooms. Users often report shifts in perception, introspective visions, and altered states of consciousness. When combined with an MAOI plant, these effects can become much stronger and longer-lasting, typically lasting 4–6 hours. Due to its intensity, newcomers are advised to begin with low amounts.

How to Use

There are two common ways Mimosa hostilis root bark is traditionally prepared:

  • Simple cold-water infusion: Place 15–30 g of root bark powder in 150 ml of cold water for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Filter and repeat the process with the same powder. Combine both extracts and consume on an empty stomach.
  • Anahuasca preparation: Mimosa hostilis is powdered and boiled in water for 1.5–4 hours to make a hot-water infusion. Typical doses are:
    • 5 g – low dose
    • 10 g – moderate dose
    • 15 g – strong dose

This is traditionally consumed 15–60 minutes after taking an MAOI preparation such as 3–4 g of Peganum harmala or 50–150 g of Banisteriopsis caapi.
